Roof Tiling and Slating in Dorking and Surrey

Whether it is a few courses around a chimney or a whole slope, the tiles are only as good as the way they are laid. We match existing tiles and slates, set out the courses properly and finish ridges, hips and verges so they stay put.

Surrey roofs come in every covering there is: concrete interlocking tiles on the post-war estates, plain clay tiles on the older villas and cottages under the Downs, natural slate on the Victorian terraces in Redhill and Guildford, and the odd stone roof around Horsham. Each is laid differently, with its own gauge, lap and fixings, and a roof tiled by someone who does not know the material will leak or shed tiles in the first winter.

We tile and slate new roofs, re-tile slopes where the covering has failed, and do the fiddly bits: tiling around roof windows, chimneys and vents, hips and valleys, and the mortar or dry-fix work at ridges and verges. On older roofs we source reclaimed tiles and slates so a repair blends in rather than standing out.

Signs your tiles or slates need work

  • Tiles slipping out of line or missing after wind
  • Slates with nail sickness: the slate is fine but the nails have rusted through
  • Cracked, flaking or porous tiles that hold water
  • Ridge or hip tiles loose or with mortar falling out
  • Moss thick enough to lift the tiles and hold water against the felt
  • Verges with cracked mortar or no undercloak

How much does roof tiling cost?

Tiling is priced by the square metre plus access, and the covering makes a big difference: interlocking concrete tiles are the cheapest, plain clay tiles and natural slate the most. Re-tiling a single slope on a semi is a few days' work. We look at the roof, measure up and quote a fixed price in writing, including scaffold if it is needed.

Re-tile or repair?

If the problem is a handful of tiles, we repair. If a slope has lost its fixings, the battens are rotten or the tiles are porous across the whole face, re-tiling the slope on new membrane and battens is the right job, and often the rest of the roof is fine and can be left.

One thing I liked they sourced slates that matched the original perfectly. It didn’t stand out at all, just blended in as if nothing ever happened.

Good questions, answered.

Anything else, just ask. You speak to Will or Sam, not a call centre.

Can you match old tiles?

Usually. We carry the common concrete and clay tiles and can source reclaimed tiles and slates for older roofs. Where an exact match is impossible we tile a whole slope or elevation so the join is at a hip or ridge.

What is nail sickness?

On older slate roofs the iron nails rust through long before the slates fail, so slates start slipping all over the roof. The fix is to strip and re-lay the slates on new battens with copper or stainless nails.

Is dry ridge better than mortar?

A dry ridge system is mechanically fixed, so it does not crack or blow off and needs no maintenance. Mortar bedding looks traditional and suits period roofs; we do both.

Can you fit roof windows at the same time?

Yes. Fitting a Velux while a slope is being re-tiled is the cheapest moment to do it, because the tiles around it are coming off anyway.
